Lea is an independent advisor to family owned and other closely held businesses. He has served as a management and performance improvement trainer and consultant to owners, executives and directors of US and foreign companies, including training public and private sector managers in Iraq and Afghanistan under conflict conditions. His special professional interest is helping companies to identify and resolve performance and relationship issues that limit business planning and sound management decision-making.
Jim’s column “Family Business” appears in the Triangle Business Journal and other newspapers and online. His book Keeping It in the Family: Successful Succession of the Family Business, published in English and Spanish, is credited with introducing a new succession planning model. His most recent book, When Families Fight, is distributed by Amazon’s Kindle Books.
Jim retired from the UNC-Chapel Hill faculty in 2011. He and his wife live in Chapel Hill.
